Southern CA June 13- July 2, 2010
Southern CA
Our first camp of Summer 2010 will begin on June 13th, will run for three weeks through July 2nd, and will be largely held at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center. During the first week, students form bands based on their interests, experience, and instruments, and creatively collaborate to write two original songs. Students will have the expertise of a band coach at their disposal to help work through the creative process and will begin to conceptualize ideas for their music video, photo shoot, and overall band image. The days in week one will consist of songwriting workshops, band practice, specific instrument lessons, workshops of the student's choice (electives), and a guest speaker each afternoon. Past electives have included: do-it-yourself promotion, at-home recording, electronic music, ins and outs of the music industry, and composition. Hours not filled with music curriculum will consist of planned activities such as swimming, zip lining, ropes course adventures, outdoor sports, and movie watching. Week two will allow students to work through the component parts of recording a professional demo as each band will track, mix, and master one of their songs with the help of their band coach. Finally, in week three, students take their act on the road and the whole camp goes on tour with each band performing their songs at various venues. The last show of the tour will be held at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana in which students will open up for a professional, headlining band.
Portland, OR July 11- July 23, 2010
Portland, OR
Our second camp of Summer 2010 will begin on July 11th and will run slightly shorter than our first, as it will have no third week touring component, ending on July 23rd. Our Portland Camp will be held on the Concordia University campus and the first two weeks will function exactly as those in our Southern CA camp. During week one students will write two original songs and will be supported in their creative process by a band coach and with workshops, instrument lessons, and guest speakers. Students will also take field trips, both related and unrelated to their music education, and will spend evening and afternoon hours doing recreational activities. During week two, students will experience a full education in recording through tracking, mixing, and mastering one of their songs with the help of their band coach. Throughout the two weeks, students will work through ideas for their band's music video and photo shoot, and will be given the opportunity to perform at various open mic shows. The last day of camp will include a final show, in which students will perform their songs by opening up for a major headliner.
